Discover these organisational tips from a mompreneur who works from home. How to keep time for yourself and your children, despite the long hours!
It’s not easy to start your own business and work from home!
Liora, who left her job at a bank to start her own tutoring business, is an expert on the subject! She coaches students taking entrance examinations to schools and universities from her home or worldwide using Skype. Despite her flexible hours, Liora balances her organisation in order to spend time with her princesses.
In this interview about her daily organisation, you will see Liora in action!!
Liora, how does your day start?
The alarm clock rings at 6.30am because I need to have 30 minutes of peace in the house before waking the children. I use the time to do some exercises, sit-ups and suchlike, while listening to music. It energises me and helps me to wake up. I always take a shower before waking the children, because I can enjoy 3 uninterrupted minutes and that is sacred!
Any tips to help avoid the morning craziness with the kids?
Before, I would spend my time getting cross in the morning because the children weren’t getting ready, until one day I had enough: I sat them down on a chair and I gave them a list of tasks to perform every morning, always in the same order. My 3 year old daughter can’t read yet, so I remind her of them when she wakes up, but at least things run smoothly now and the neighbours don’t have to listen to me every morning!!
How do you organise school runs and other journeys?
I arrange it so that my daughters have one school run with me per day, morning or evening depending on the day. I owe that simply to my “impulsive” side: one day I approached a mum from the school who I didn’t know at all when I bumped into her by chance in my area.
It’s one of the best ideas I ever had: it turns out that she lives 5 minutes from my house on foot (it’s a 20 minute drive to the school) and she had lost all hope of ever getting out of spending 2 hours a day going to and from the school. Now, we each do one run, 40 minutes there and back. It’s a life-changer, and in particular it allows me to work much more calmly… What’s more, when I don’t do the school run I can take my youngest to pre-school just beside where I live on foot, no stress!
The moral of the story – for an organised day, you should always talk to other mums. It could change your life!

Your lessons run into each other, so how do you manage to take a breather?
I try to organise my professional appointments in a way that allows me to have 1 or 1½ hours during the day, if possible, to have a coffee with my friends / do some sport / go shopping / go to appointments that are unmanageable with the children (doctor…). I don’t always succeed, but ever since I was bedridden for 4 days with lumbago that was caused by fatigue and stress, I push myself to manage things to prevent it happening again… It does me a world of good!

Your students have late hours. How do you manage to spend time with your daughters?
I have appointments one after another during the day, but I always stop late in the afternoon to pick up one of my daughters from school and bring her home / drop her off at an activity before the babysitter takes over.
Then I have another series of appointments until 7pm or 8 – 8.30pm depending on the day. It’s late when you have young children, but because I work at home, I always take 5 minutes to kiss them goodnight, and they can always come by quickly and tell me something when they get home from school. My pupils are used to seeing them pop in!

Thank you Liora for telling us about your organised day!
Plan breaks and alternate time with each child to have time for yourself and quality time with the kids… the key to successful working from home!
Apart from that, I’m going to try the morning list – the hardest thing will be doing them in order!
